Citronella essential oil is extracted from the leaves and stems of a grass of the same name. Citronella is a grass which is mainly found in Asian countries and in the islands of South Pacific, with China and Indonesia being the largest producers. Couple of clinical tests have shown that pure citronella oil has anti fungal, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Due to these features, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has declared citronella as a "bio pesticide" - a nontoxic solutions against insects.
Uses of citronella essential oil
Pain-reliever and anti-inflammation

This is one essential oil which sedates inflammation, especially pertaining to the digestive system. Along with this the inflammation caused due to the side effects of narcotics, hot & spicy food and other drugs too is cured by citronella essential oil.

Its anti-oxidant properties and ability to increase the blood flow, make citronella the best choice of pain-reliever. When used in combination with coconut/ , citronella helps in reducing pain to a large extent.
Natural insect repellent

This is one plant which is known for its insect repellent qualities. It also helps repel mosquitoes which cause "dengue fever" and helps in preventing head lice, body lice and flies. Of late it is also used as a popular bug repellent and is thus used as an active ingredient in candles. It is also advised to combine citronella essential oil with almond/ coconut/ olive oil and use as moisturizer for the whole body.
Aids digestion

This is yet another popular use of citronella essential oil. This oil reduces inflammation, detoxifies and cleanses the liver, gut and stomach. Its compounds prevent the growth of bacteria in the digestive tract and thereby speeds up healing process.
